The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo 15202ST is the reference most collectors still picture when they think "steel Jumbo" — the 39mm Extra-Thin that carried Gérald Genta’s 1972 original almost unchanged. Audemars Piguet discontinued it in 2022, on the brand’s 150th anniversary, replacing it with the 16202ST. Its final retail price was about US$33,200; today, as a closed-production collectible, it trades at roughly £75,000–£110,000 for the blue dial. Here’s why it commands that, and what to watch for.
The 15202 is the direct descendant of the original 5402 "Jumbo" of 1972: the same slim 39mm Extra-Thin case, the ultra-thin Calibre 2121 automatic, and the purity of proportion that defines the Royal Oak at its best. AP produced relatively few each year — estimates suggest fewer than 2,000 — and demand from serious collectors consistently exceeded supply. That combination of historical significance and genuine scarcity is why it is widely considered the most compelling long-term value in the entire family.
As a discontinued reference, the 15202ST trades entirely on the secondary market: roughly £75,000–£110,000 for the blue dial, and around £70,000–£100,000 for grey-dial examples, in 2026. Unlike the 41mm line, whose premium contracted sharply after 2022, the Jumbo’s premium over its old retail has remained relatively stable — its value rests on scarcity and legacy, not the price of metal.
